Traore not called up on a whim, insists Spain boss Moreno

Spain head coach Robert Moreno insists he did not call up Wolves winger Adama Traore on a whim for this month s Euro 2020 qualifying matches.

Traore was surprisingly named as a replacement for the injured Rodrigo Moreno only for a hamstring issue to force him to withdraw from the squad.

It had been suggested Traore was only called up so that he would make a competitive appearance for Spain and therefore no longer be eligible to represent Mali, the country of his parents.

However, Moreno who worked with the player at Hospitalet and Barcelona, where he made his senior debut says he has long considered calling up Traore due to his ability to unsettle deep-lying defences.

I m looking for players who can create an imbalance. Adama Traore has that and is very…

Superclasico has lost its magic – Solari´s mixed feelings on Libertadores final

Real Madrid head coach Santiago Solari conceded to mixed emotions over the Copa Libertadores final second leg between River Plate and Boca Juniors being moved to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The bitter Buenos Aires rivals were locked at 2-2 ahead of last weekend s scheduled meeting at El Monumental, only for the game to be abandoned twice as a result of an attack on the Boca team bus by River supporters.

CONMEBOL settled on Madrid as the solution in its search for an alternative venue, with the match coming to the Spanish capital on December 9.

That decision has been appealed by both clubs and Solari, who began his professional career with River before moving to Europe, told a news conference he hoped the match would act to salvage the reputation of a celebrated fixtur…

What the papers say

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has been linked with a move to Manchester United. According to The Sun – which cites German outlet Bild – the Red Devils are in the market to exploit the veteran Germany international’s lack of playing time since the arrival of Harry Kane, with a 2024 bid.

Scotland 2 England 2: Kane rescues point amid late drama

Stand-in captain Harry Kane struck deep into injury time as England rescued a 2-2 draw in a dramatic finale to Saturday s World Cup qualifying contest against old rivals Scotland.

It looked as though the Three Lions were on course for a routine three points when substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the beneficiary of poor goalkeeping from Craig Gordon with 20 minutes remaining.

However, Hampden Park erupted in the 87th minute when Leigh Griffiths curled home a 25-yard free-kick for his first international goal, before lightning struck twice in the final minute of normal time as another set-piece from the Celtic star put Scotland on the brink of a famous Group F victory.

The drama was not finished, though, as Kane – wearing the armband in place of the absent…

Mourinho right to drop Pogba, says Silvestre

Paul Pogba deserved to be dropped by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, according to the club s former defender Mikael Silvestre.

Pogba was left on the bench for last month s Champions League game at Sevilla, with Scott McTominay preferred, although the France international came on as a first-half substitute due to Ander Herrera s injury.

Mourinho has criticised Pogba s form, with the midfielder struggling in Premier League defeats at Tottenham and Newcastle United, while the 24-year-old made little impact in Monday s comeback win at Crystal Palace.

Silvestre, who played for United between 1999 and 2008, thinks Mourinho made the right decision in leaving former Juventus midfielder Pogba, who was signed for €105million in August 2016, out of his team.
