Liam Cooper’s words helped spark Scotland’s super late show, says John McGinn

Scotland midfielder John McGinn credited Liam Cooper’s vocal encouragement and some respite from the sun as sparks for their unlikely Oslo comeback along with their “phenomenal” substitutes.

McGinn admitted Scotland had barely posed a threat before goals in the final four minutes from Lyndon Dykes and substitute Kenny McLean earned a 2-1 victory over Norway.

Cooper had come on for the fatigued Kieran Tierney not long after Erling Haaland had put the hosts ahead with a 61st minute penalty and McGinn was inspired by the defender’s rallying cries.

The Euro 2024 qualifier had begun in heat of about 30 degrees and Scotland were struggling to get back in the match but the arrival of McLean, Stuart Armstrong and Billy Gilmour and a change of tactics helped turn …

Nunez to face Ajax after missing Forest defeat but Klopp unsure of Thiago

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects Darwin Nunez to face Ajax in midweek after missing Saturday s shock defeat to Nottingham Forest with a hamstring injury.

Uruguay striker Nunez scored the only goal of the game on Wednesday as the Reds beat West Ham, building on a lively – albeit chaotic – cameo against Manchester City last weekend.

But he was withdrawn in the second half with a hamstring strain and that prevented him from featuring at the City Ground, his absence a blow as the Reds lacked presence in attack.

Forest won 1-0 thanks to a goal from former Liverpool youngster Taiwo Awoniyi, and Klopp will be desperate for his side to get the defeat out of their system as quickly as possible.

Liverpool can secure their progression to the last 16 of the…

FIFA set to learn findings from Qatar bid process investigation

FIFA have confirmed results of an investigation into bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be revealed after this year s tournament.

The process surrounding Qatar s successful bid has faced particular scrutiny amid fresh allegations of corruption.

Reports in the British press over the weekend alleged that Mohamed Bin Hammam, former president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), paid up to $5million to football officials to drum up support for the bid.

Qatar s 2022 Bid Committee subsequently released a statement denying the claims, and insisted Bin Hammam had no role in the bidding process.

Previously, former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner was accused of receiving $2million in payments from a firm controlled by a former Qatari football official in retu…

There was no prospect for me despite the club and team being in my heart.

Eintracht s relegation was confirmed when they suffered a 3-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, despite taking a second-half lead.

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto labelled his team s shock 3-1 win over Uruguay as a historic triumph for the CONCACAF nation.

Pinto acknowledged the significance of Saturday s victory, against the team who had beaten them in a qualification play-off for the 2010 World Cup.

(It is) a historic triumph for football in Costa Rica, said the 61-year-old after the match.

The Colombian added: We had worried a lot about their passing game but today we beat them.

Higuain unlucky in finals, says Batistuta

Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain has had a lot of bad luck with his crucial missed chances in finals, according to Gabriel Batistuta.

Higuain has often been criticised for his wastefulness in big matches, namely Argentina s losses in the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 and 2016 Copa America deciders.

But Batistuta, who scored 54 goals for Argentina during his career, feels Higuain – and to a lesser extent Sergio Aguero – has been unfortunate with the national team.

They ve had a lot of bad luck, especially Higuain. He missed key chances in the three finals, he told FIFA 1904.

I say it s bad luck because he was the one who created those three opportunities. It s not like a team-mate did everything and left him through on goal. His bad luck was tha…

Newcastle pull off club-record Almiron deal

Newcastle United have completed a club-record deadline-day move for midfielder Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United.

The on-off move had been mooted since December, when Almiron led Atlanta to MLS Cup glory, and was finalised on Thursday as Newcastle splashed out a reported £20.5million on the Paraguay international.

The deal sees the Premier League s longest standing club-record broken, with the Magpies belatedly agreeing a deal to surpass their £16.5m signing of Michael Owen in 2005.

Almiron was nominated for the MVP award in MLS in 2018, having quickly established himself as one of the league s standout stars after arriving at the expansion side the previous season.

The 24-year-old scored 21 goals in 62 regular season MLS games, contributing 28 assists…
